55 Marischal Street was one of those cute little city centre properties you just fell in love with. I remember when the agent showed me the property; it was dark, cold, and needed TLC, but I could see everything I wanted to do to it at that very moment.
I knew I could bring the property to life. The location was perfect because it is in the city centre, close to the train station and bus station, close to all amenities, and yet it’s on a lovely, peaceful street. Let’s say I loved the flat so much.
I decided to paint the walls white without any undertones because white makes small spaces seem much larger and will make rooms feel light and airy. I chose a brown wooden floor to cool the white down, and it works with my kitchen worktop as the flat is an open-plan one.
I didn’t want colours running here and there; I wanted a flow. With Marischal Street Flat, I got to learn and understand the types of licences and building requirements. Marischal Street flats are in a B-listed building. Category B-listed buildings are buildings of special architectural or historic interest that are major examples of a particular period, style, or building type. If you want to work in such buildings, you need to apply for listed building consent from your local authority, which is to demolish, alter, or extend any part of your listed building. Works in an internal building that do not affect the character of the listed building do not normally require consent.
